ABL has been selected to deliver marine warranty survey services for Hellenic Cables’ installation of upgraded interconnectors linking Greece’s Ionian islands.
The project comprises new submarine cables between Kefalonia and Zakynthos, and Lefkada and Kefalonia, upgrading the 150kV network to boost energy security and reliability across the region, according to ABL.
Cables totalling 38km will be produced, loaded, transported and installed by Hellenic Cables, which will lead the works, with completion due in 2026.
ABL said its French operation will manage the scope, supported by its Greek office for site attendances, fleet surveys and documentation review.
Fabien Thomas (pictured), ABL country manager in France, said: “We have in the past supported as marine warranty surveyor on several Greek interconnector projects. These are critical infrastructure assets to shore up reliable energy supply and energy resilience between Greece’s many islands. As Greece seeks to accelerate its net-zero goals, these new interconnectors will also be key in supporting the low-cost transmission of renewable energy to more consumers.”
ABL noted recent interconnector experience including Lavrio-Serifos and Serifos-Milos in Greece, Marinus Link in Australia, Biscay between France and Spain, CHPE in North America, and Greenlink between the UK and Ireland.
