UK renewables generation supported by the Contracts for Difference (CfD) regime almost doubled to over 12 terrawatt-hours in the past financial year.
UK CfD counterparty the Low Carbon Contracts Company said in its annual report that generation was 12.1TWh from April 2018 to the end of March 2019, up from 6.6TWh the previous year.
Ten CfD projects became operational in the last year while the LCCC approved milestone requirements for over 97% of the capacity awarded in the second allocation round in 2017, adding a further 3.2GW to the pipeline.
The LCCC manages 52 CfDs within its portfolio with a combined capacity of over 13GW and estimated lifetime value of £66bn.
The company expects new low carbon generation to be commissioned almost every month during 2019/20.
In a related development, the LCCC has launched online “dashboards” that display information about the CfD portfolio, generation forecasts and information on cash flows, broken down by technology and other criteria.
LCCC plans to further develop the functionality of the CfD dashboards and provide more context to support understanding of how the scheme operates and the part it plays in decarbonising the UK power system.
“This initiative is in line with the government-appointed energy data taskforce recommendations on data openness. We look forward to building on this step to give further insight into the schemes we manage,” said LCCC chief executive Neil McDermott.
