DNV GL has unveiled an amended standard providing principles, technical requirements and guidance for extending the lifetime of onshore and offshore wind turbines.
“When designing wind turbines, a design lifetime of 20 years is generally assumed as a basis for dimensioning”, the certifier said.
“Extension of lifetime for existing wind turbines can be justifiable from both a technical and an economic point of view.”
The standard focuses on safe operation of the turbine beyond the original design lifetime. It is applicable to all types of wind turbines but has so far been applied to Gamesa G47 machines.
The new DNVGL-ST-0262 standard is based on a 2009 Germanischer Lloyd guideline. It is complemented by a the DNVGL-SE-0263 service specification.
