EirGrid said 39% of electricity used in January came from renewable sources as new all-time demand peaks for a Saturday and a Sunday were recorded.
The operator added that wind provided 33% of all power, delivering 1119GWh compared with 1243GWh in December.
It stated that solar contributed just under 1% to the fuel mix, with grid-scale output peaking at 371MW on 28 January alongside an estimated similar volume of embedded generation.
Gas accounted for 44% of electricity last month and 16% was imported via interconnection.
On 3 January demand reached a Saturday record of 5297MW, while on 4 January a Sunday peak of 5480MW was set.
Total system demand stood at 3409GWh in January, up from 3234GWh in December and 2894GWh in January 2025.
EirGrid said the monthly peak of 5916MW, recorded on 5 January, remained below last year’s 6024MW due to milder temperatures.
“The high demand on the system that we have seen over recent months and that we expect at this time of year continued in January,” said Diarmaid Gillespie (pictured), EirGrid’s director of system operations.
“Notably there were all-time demand peaks for a Saturday and a Sunday recorded in the month, with the record set on Saturday 3 January the highest that we have seen for a Saturday since the same weekend last year,” he added.
“Similarly to what our recent data shows us, January again saw a significant amount of renewable energy contributing to the overall fuel mix.”
