Renewable hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing capacity announcements reached a record 45GW in the fourth quarter of 2022, up 72% from the previous quarter, according to analysis from Wood Mackenzie.
The new capacity additions take the total announced nameplate electrolyser manufacturing capacity worldwide to 106GW.
Around 41GW of the Q4 announcements were for planned gigafactories based in Africa.
The production capacity announcements counterbalanced a slow-down in global hydrogen project announcements.
Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of electrolysers “chased the 360GW pipeline with a record 83GW in manufacturing announcements through 2022”, stated Wood Mackenzie.
Senior research analyst, hydrogen and emerging technologies, at Wood Mackenzie Flor Lucia De la Cruz said: “A year ago, electrolyser manufacturing capacity looked like a bottleneck.
“OEMs have responded so swiftly that there is a risk of significant manufacturing overcapacity by 2025, particularly if production projects fail to progress.
“However, OEMs are ramping up manufacturing output slower than nameplate capacity given the additional time required to develop labour and skills as well as securing machinery and materials.”
