Capital Dynamics and Solo Renewables have agreed a joint venture to deliver a £100m long duration energy storage project in Northern Ireland.
Capital Dynamics said the 150MW Islandmagee project will provide up to eight hours of storage, equivalent to 1200MWh, and is among the first large-scale LDES sites in the Irish Single Electricity Market.
The company added the project, which received planning approval in February 2026 from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, could supply energy for up to 36,000 households per day assuming one discharge cycle.
The project is located in Islandmagee and is intended to support grid stability and the integration of renewable energy as capacity increases.
Long-duration storage is expected to play a growing role in managing variability in renewable generation and reducing curtailment across the system.
Capital Dynamics and Solo Renewables said they will now work with authorities and stakeholders to progress the project following planning approval.
“Long-duration storage has a critical role to play in supporting Northern Ireland’s energy transition and is a fast and efficient way to strengthen grid resilience as renewable generation continues to grow,” said Barney Coles, senior managing director and co-head of clean energy at Capital Dynamics.
“The Islandmagee LDES project represents an important step in developing the long-duration storage infrastructure needed to support Northern Ireland’s evolving energy system.
“Securing planning approval in six months reflects the strength of this project and the local understanding that Islandmagee is one of the most strategically important locations in the all-island energy network,” said Andrew Hutchinson, director at Solo Renewables.
“We’re pleased Capital Dynamics sees the potential of the Islandmagee LDES project and we’re looking forward to delivering a landmark storage facility that supports the energy transition.”
