Eku Energy commissions 130MWh battery duo in UK

Eku Energy and NHOA Energy have commissioned two battery energy storage projects in Essex and Buckinghamshire with a combined capacity of 130MWh.

The Basildon and Loudwater assets have completed testing and verification and are now ready for commercial operation, according to Eku Energy.

The 28MW/56MWh Basildon BESS is Eku Energy’s first two-hour system in the UK and will support grid stability near key infrastructure, including gas peakers and a solar PV plant.

The 39MW/55MWh Loudwater facility occupies 0.6 acres near High Wycombe and has been designed with a low visual profile to reflect its rural setting.

Both sites will deliver ancillary and balancing services to the local and national grids, said the company.

Eku Energy chief executive Daniel Burrows said: “The commissioning of Loudwater BESS and Basildon BESS creates diversity of our operating portfolio in the United Kingdom.”

“Our growing operating portfolio creates further opportunities to support our customers by structuring innovative long-term contracts.”

Burrows added: “Battery storage is an integral part of building more flexible and resilient energy systems that are transitioning towards a higher penetration of renewable generation.”

NHOA Energy, which supplied the BESS equipment, will also provide long-term operations and maintenance services for both sites.

Lucie Kanius-Dujardin, global managing director of NHOA Energy, said: “These projects exemplify how trusted, high-performance partnerships are essential for the energy transition.”

“We are proud to continue our journey alongside Eku Energy.”

The Basildon project is located near critical 400kV substations and upcoming transmission upgrades, with Habitat Energy providing trading services.

Loudwater will be optimised by Statkraft Energy on behalf of Eku Energy.

Both sites were delivered in partnership with BOP contractor ESM Power.
