Vattenfall receives approval from Brunsbuttel City Council to advance planning for a 254MW battery with 700MWh of storage at the site of the former nuclear power plant.
The company added that the battery is scheduled to go into operation by 2028 at the latest.
Claus Wattendrup, head of solar and batteries at Vattenfall, stated: “This is very good news for Vattenfall and for the region. Batteries are rapidly becoming an essential part of the energy system in Germany. With the existing space and the existing grid connection, the site in Brunsbuttel offers very good conditions for the construction of the battery storage system. My thanks go to the entire project team, which has driven this forward-looking project with a great deal of personal commitment.”
Johanne Robke, head of the Brunsbuttel battery project at Vattenfall, said: “The planning and development of such an infrastructure project requires extensive information and discussions with numerous stakeholders. In particular, the dialogue with the responsible authorities and the city of Brunsbuttel was very constructive from our point of view, and always characterized by the goal of finding viable solutions for all parties involved. The city’s resolution on the statutes is an important milestone for us so that the battery can become a reality.”
According to Vattenfall, the battery and a new substation connecting it to the grid are planned to be built and commissioned by 2028 at the latest, subject to a final investment decision.
