Statera Energy has brought online the 300MW/600MWh Thurrock Storage scheme, described as the largest operational battery energy storage system in Great Britain, with market access and optimisation support from Statkraft.
The Essex-based asset can power 680,000 homes for up to two hours, according to Statera, and Statkraft signed a PPA in 2023 to optimise the project and provide a revenue floor structure.
Brian Lonn, head of UK flexibility at Statkraft, said: “Statera Energy has delivered a nationally significant project that plays a vital role in advancing Great Britain’s energy transition.”
“I’m pleased to build on our strong partnership with Statera, and we look forward to continuing to work together to optimise their assets in the years ahead,” said Lonn.
Lewis Elder, Statera’s director of commercial operations and policy, said: “We are delighted that Thurrock Storage has now entered commercial operations.”
“Thanks to our close collaboration with Statkraft, the site is fully onboarded and active in the market,” said Elder.
Statkraft said its UK portfolio includes more than 4GW of long-term renewable PPAs and 3.5GW of flexible assets under contract.
