German economy and energy minister Peter Altmaier has tabled an action plan designed in part to speed expansion of the national grid network.
Measures include simplified planning procedures for some new power lines and improved cooperation between grid operators and, for example, administrative bodies.
In addition, the plan aims to improve the existing grid with new technologies and operation concepts.
New overhead line conductors could be installed that can cope with higher temperatures and transmit more power, the minister proposes.
New transformers would also be able to reroute electricity to lines with idle capacity, he added.
Legislation will be put forward in autumn.
“We are lagging behind with grid expansion which causes extra costs for electricity customers,” said Altmaier.
“The amended grid expansion acceleration law will help simplify administrative processes and make an important contribution towards the implementation of the energy transition”, he added.
