BalWin1 and 2 cable corridors approved

reNEWS EditorialBy reNEWS EditorialMarch 6, 20242 Mins Read
Amprion secures state nod for offshore wind grid cables

The onshore cable corridors for the BalWin1 and 2 grid connections in Germany have been determined and approved by German authorities.

The Office for Regional Development Weser-Ems (ArL) has published its findings on the plan, confirming the corridor presented by Amprion in its plan.

Amprion proposed adjusting its plan during the spatial planning process to use the eastern variant of the 650m wide corridor instead of the originally proposed western variant.

Amprion is still planning the specific routes for the lines with the determined corridors.

The plan also includes possible converter locations for BalWin1 and its connection to the Wehrendorf substation. Possible converter locations Am Wehsand-Ost and In der Strothe and their respective AC connections have been classified as spatially and environmentally compatible.

The BalWin1 and BalWin2 projects will connect North Sea offshore wind farms to the German transmission grid.

The submarine and underground cables run to their network connection points in Wehrendorf in Lower Saxony (BalWin1) and in Westerkappeln in North Rhine-Westphalia (BalWin2).

Amprion wants to submit the documents for the planning approval process in 2025, in which the specific route and other aspects such as construction will be determined. The route corridor that has now been defined forms the basis for further planning.

“The proceedings in North Rhine-Westphalia ended about a month ago. Now we also have planning security in Lower Saxony and can continue to prepare the plan approval procedures,” said Linda Halekotte, project manager at Amprion.
