GIGA Storage and grid operator TenneT have signed the first time-bound connection and transmission agreement in the Netherlands, which the latter describes as milestone that marks an important step forward in more efficient use of the existing electricity network.
The new agreement gives GIGA Storage the right to take electricity from the grid or feed it back into the grid at least 85% of the time.
The new type of contract, which has been developed as part of the National Grid Congestion Action Programme, enables GIGA Storage to connect its 300MW battery project GIGA Leopard with a storage capacity of up to 1200MWh, to the electricity grid in Delfzijl.
“This new form of contract ensures that we make more efficient use of the scarce space on the grid,” said TenneT.
“This is necessary because the pressure on the electricity grid currently means that connections with a full and fixed transmission right are not always possible.”
At the same time, it is attractive for customers because they can get a discount of up to 65% on the transmission rates, added the TSO.
Minister Sophie Hermans of Climate and Green Growth: “We are all working very hard to expand the electricity grid faster, and we also need to use the grid in a smarter way.
“Thanks to this new type of contract and the good cooperation, it will be possible to make optimal use of the space on the power grid that is still available outside the ‘rush hour’. And also to use the sustainable electricity when there is less sun and wind.
“I hope this is a breakthrough and other companies that can also consider a flexible contract.”
TenneT chief executive Manon van Beek said: “This agreement with GIGA Storage is a crucial step in improving the efficiency and reliability of our current power grid.
“With this time-bound type of contract, we can make better use of the available capacity and connect more customers who use the grid outside rush hour.”
GIGA Storage chief executive Ruud Nijs added: “With this new contract, we show that by working together we can come up with very good solutions.
“By listening carefully to each other, we are really taking the energy transition a step forward and making a significant contribution to a more sustainable and stable energy supply.”
The new agreement with TenneT will take effect on 1 October 2025.
