UK Power Networks and National Grid are sharing real-time data for the first time as part of a project aimed at integrating more renewables into the network.
The research is part of the company’s Kent Active System Management (KASM) project, which aims to benefit areas where electricity generation far outstrips demand due to the high number of solar and offshore wind farms.
The Low Carbon Networks Fund, which is administered by Ofgem, has provided £3.3m for the scheme, with UK Power Networks contributing an additional £450,000.
“Sharing this real-time data means that both organisations can build an accurate long-term picture of exactly what is happening on the network and plan future capacity accordingly,” the organisations said.
They added that the shared data and a new software tools under development is expected to give “control operators the confidence to allow more energy onto the system by analysing complex scenarios in seconds and predicting the possible impacts of control decisions as they are made”.
