The Welsh Affairs Committee at the UK parliament is holding the first evidence session this morning of its inquiry into grid capacity in Wales.
MPs will be exploring the implications of grid capacity issues, with likely topics to be discussed including Wales’ transmission network, grid connections to future renewable energy projects, and the role of stakeholders in preparing the grid for future demand.
Other topics include smart export guarantees, relevant UK and Welsh government energy policy, and what more the UK and Welsh governments can do to ‘future-proof’ the grid.
The inquiry follows the Committee’s previous inquiry, Renewable energy in Wales.
The Committee argued that Wales could be a leader in renewable energy, but that infrastructure issues, such as grid capacity, could hinder progress and pose a significant challenge in meeting net zero commitments.
The meeting kicks off at 10am today.
