R&R Ice Cream, Iona Capital and Veolia have teamed up to use an ice cream by-product to fuel an anaerobic digestion plant in the UK generating biomethane for the National Grid.
The companies said the by-product from R&R’s factory at Leeming Bar in North Yorkshire consists of sugar, fat and protein left behind after production line cleansing.
Chocolate ice cream provides 10% more energy than vanilla and 20% more than strawberry, they added.
The raw material would otherwise be discarded and sent to landfill, the partners said.
Veolia UK & Ireland senior executive vice president Estelle Brachlianoff said: “This project is a prime example of using creative thinking to turn waste into green energy.”
R&R produces ice cream for brands such as Nestlé’s Fab, Rowntrees’ Fruit Pastille lollies, Cadbury’s Dairy Milk chocolate sticks, Oreo ice cream and Yoomoo frozen yogurt.
