Octopus Energy has signed a partnership with wind turbine manufacturer Mingyang Smart Energy to accelerate the UK’s renewables rollout.

The deal will see Octopus software combined with Mingyang’s turbine technology to cut costs and boost cyber security, the partners said.

Octopus Energy Generation, the company’s renewables arm, plans to deploy Mingyang machines to deliver up to 6GW of capacity identified through its ‘Winder’ platform, which links landowners and communities keen to host onshore wind projects.

Since its launch in 2022, the matchmaking tool has located sites with the potential to power nearly 5 million homes.

The agreement was signed following the first Joint Economic and Trade Committee in seven years and is initially focused on onshore wind, with scope to expand into solar and storage.

Octopus manages nearly 5GW of renewable assets globally, including 1.5GW of wind.

Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation, said: “The UK is already a leader in wind, and this partnership with Ming Yang is a core pathway to deliver some of the cheapest and most secure energy the UK has seen.”

Angie (Chao) Zhang, vice president of Mingyang Smart Energy, said: “Ming Yang and Octopus share a strong commitment to making clean energy affordable, reliable, and accessible. This partnership marks an exciting step forward in delivering safe, efficient renewable energy to local communities across the UK.”
