A survey of Members of the Scottish Parliament has revealed the nation’s politicians believe renewables have a higher growth potential than any other industry.
Independent research firm PA Advocacy found four in 10 (39%) MSPs think the renewables industry has the best growth prospects over the next five years – ahead of financial services (38%), food & drink (23%) and tourism (21%).
Chief executive of industry body Scottish Renewables Claire Mack said the research shows a low-carbon energy system powered by renewables can spur economic growth in Scotland.
“Sustained support from governments at Holyrood and Westminster is important if we are to continue to show what our industry can do, both on and offshore, to deliver against our stretching climate change targets while continuing to develop sustainable, long-term, skilled employment for thousands of people across Scotland,” she said.
The survey was carried out ahead of Scottish Renewables’ annual conference, which will be held on March 24 and 25 in Edinburgh.
The ministers were surveyed late last year, with 77 of all 129 members responding.
