Spain generated 15% more wind power in March 2020 over the same period last year, according to the latest data.
In a statement, Spanish renewables association AEE said wind energy generation contributed 27.6% of Spanish power demand in March, the market price is the lowest in the last four years and CO2 emissions from the electrical system have reached a record low.
The AEE said higher wind generation and reduction in demand in March 2020 spurred the lowest arithmetic average price in the last four years for wind – 27.74 €/MWh.
Spanish wind generation reached 5,543 GW in March, with demand coverage of 27.6% for the same period, according to Red Eléctrica data.
In the statement, AEE attributed the recent fall in electricity demand to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The body also noted that an increase in wind generation and other renewables led to CO2 emissions from the electricity system reaching an all-time low in March.
“With only 1.85 million tonnes CO2, and an average of 0.09 tonnes CO2/MW, there has been a reduction of 30% compared to March last year,” AEE said.
“Just five years ago, the sector’s average emissions in March were 0.17 tonnes CO2/MW, almost double that of March 2020.”
