UK biomethane production is expected to reach 3.5TWh a year in 2016 up from 2.5TWh in 2015, with 15 more plants expected to come online this year, according to the Renewable Energy Association.
The REA said in its UK Biomethane report, released today, that most facilities being developed are agricultural plants (61%) that treat crop feedstocks, crop residues and livestock slurries and manure.
A further 28% treat food waste from municipal and commercial sources, with 9% treating sewage sludges.
The increased capacity is expected to reduce the need for LNG imports by 240,000 tonnes.
The report said that a further 100 plants could be developed by the end of 2020, but growth will depend on a stable support framework from the UK government.
