UK renewables company Viridor has appointed CNIM and Clugston Construction to build a 34MW energy recovery facility at Avonmouth on the outskirts of Bristol.
Engineering contractor CNIM will provide the technology for the facility, while Clugston is the building and civils contractor.
Construction will start in the summer, with more than 600 people working at peak times and 45 permanent roles created during operations.
The £252m facility will use 320,000 tonnes of non-recyclable residual waste a year to generate renewable energy, which would otherwise go to landfill.
Viridor has a 25-year contract with Somerset County Council, which will see about one third of the available capacity at Avonmouth taken up by waste that is currently transported to three landfill sites.
The facility is scheduled to be operational in 2020.
