Israeli developer Eco Wave Power has inaugurated the deployment of a wave power plant in Gibraltar.
The first phase of a commercial-scale project, the 100kW system on Gibraltar’s Ammunition Jetty is planned to be expanded to 5MW to provide up to 15% of the rock’s power needs.
EWP’s wave power plant features eight second-generation ‘floaters’ on the pier. The power output is being sold to Gibraltar Electric Authority.
The grid-connected project is the first wave power plant in Europe operating multiple units under commercial PPA terms, the company said.
The expansion of Eco Wave Power’s EU-funded power plant from 100kW to 1MW and eventually 5MW is currently in the design phase.
EWP director Inna Braverman said: “We are already taking the next steps to move our technology forward.
“Planning and design works has begun on Eco Wave Power’s next generation of 1MW to 5MW power plant, by using larger units aiming to deliver around 10 times the capacity of Eco Wave Power’s current units in Gibraltar, and improving its efficiency.”
