Canadian tidal developer Jupiter Hydro has been granted permission by the Nova Scotia provincial government to deploy a 3MW pilot project in the Bay of Fundy.
The Department of Energy and Mines issued two operational permits to Jupiter Hydro for the scheme located near the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy in the Minas Passage.
The first permit allows the company to test a 1MW prototype that is not connected to the electricity grid, with a second for a device of up to 2MW.
Nova Scotia has also granted Jupiter Hydro a power purchase agreement that allows the Calgary company to sell the electricity it generates to Nova Scotia Power for C$0.50 per kilowatt-hour.
The project is required to obtain all other necessary approvals, permits and authorisations.
“Nova Scotia continues to be a leader in the development of clean, renewable tidal energy,” said Nova Scotia Energy and Mines Minister Derek Mombourquette.
“Having another company test their technology in the Bay of Fundy shows that this early-stage industry continues to grow and create green jobs in our rural communities.”
