The marine energy sector must start delivering to convince the European Commission it is worthy of its continued support, according to EU officials.
Speaking at the Ocean Energy Europe (OEE) conference in Brussels, DG Research and Innovation renewables lead Piotr Tulej (pictured) said the commission would continue to support marine, but “it needs to see results”.
“The EU has spent around €80m to €90m in the past years, but we need to show to our paymasters that ocean energy is worth supporting, that it will make a difference,” he added.
OEE chief executive Remi Gruet echoed the sentiments, saying Europe needs to “step up” to make its case heard next to wind, PV, geothermal and stay ahead of increased Asian investment in the sector.
