Vattenfall has thrown its weight behind an industrywide call to action aimed at boosting Europe’s energy independence and competitiveness.
The wind developer’s managing director for Europe Samira Barakat said the Copenhagen Call to Action, launched yesterday at the opening of WindEurope’s annual event, had “exactly the right measures” to drive down cost barriers and boost deployment.
Barakat said generators and consumers needed to see a continuation of cuts to the levelised cost of energy for onshore and offshore wind that have been sustained over the last 15 years from industry upscaling and increased maturity.
She told the conference “I am confident we can do that again” if the call to action and the three steps it urges governments to take on applying EU permitting rules, providing state aid to renewable power purchase agreements and de-risking wind investments with two-sided Contracts for Difference auctions is fully heeded.
“We see (electricity) demand in the energy transition is slowing down rather than accelerating. We do our best to make sure supply chains are European. However, we need to talk about affordability, let’s be honest.
“The Copenhagen Call to Action has exactly the right measures in there.”
