Vattenfall is presenting the first tiny house made from the nacelle of a discarded wind turbine at the Dutch Design Week.
At the event, which is taking place in Eindhoven, Vattenfall wants to show that innovative solutions can make an important contribution to greater sustainability.
The idea for this unconventional way of reusing a nacelle was developed by Vattenfall together with Dutch designers.
Where previously the technology of the wind turbine inside the nacelle generated electricity, the space is taken up with a kitchen, bathroom and living room.
In addition, the Tiny House is equipped with intelligent technology such as a heat pump, a photovoltaic system and a solar boiler.
The four-metre-wide, 10-metre-long and three-metre-high housing originally came from a wind turbine that produced renewable electricity in Austria for 20 years.
Thousands of wind turbines will be dismantled or replaced at the end of their service life in the coming decades and it would be better if the materials could be reused in as few steps as possible.
Thomas Hjort, Director of Innovation at Vattenfall, said: “We are looking for innovative ways to reuse materials from used turbines as effectively as possible, so make something new out of it with as few adjustments as possible.
“This saves raw materials and energy consumption and ensures that these materials will continue to be used for many years after their first use.”
Last year, Vattenfall therefore invited four design companies to think about a second life for wind turbines.
The Tiny House was conceived and designed by the company Superuse and executed by Blade-Made and Woodwave.
The companies immediately opted for the most difficult solution – designing a house that complies with building regulations in the smallest possible footprint, with a V80 2MW turbine identified as suitable.
This is the first model whose gondola is large enough for a tiny house and despite the limited dimensions, the house complies with building regulations and is therefore fully suitable for residential or holiday purposes.
