Encavis has confirmed a power purchase contract with Amazon for the supply of clean electricity from a 200MW photovoltaic plant it is building in Spain.
The solar farm, in Cabrera, near Seville, will be connected to the grid at the end of the third quarter in 2020.
Under the 10-year contract, Amazon will buy power produced by 149MW of the plant’s capacity, while the remaining 50MW of capacity will be sold into the wholesale energy market.
The installation will feature modules mounted on single-axis trackers to boost yield.
The total amount of electricity agreed over the 10-year contract period with Amazon amounts to around 3000 gigawatt hours.
The Cabrera PV plant is the second Encavis is building in Spain, along with the 300MW Talayuela solar farm.
Encavis chief executive Dierk Paskert said: “Within a few weeks after concluding a long-term power purchase agreement with an energy provider, we have reached another milestone and concluded our first contract in the high-growth green power marketing segment with technology groups.
“With this move, we are quickly entering a whole new dimension of our PPA business. Both projects with a total capacity of 500MW and the size of a modern gas-fired power plant represent Encavis’ future in the subsidy-free marketing of green electricity.
“The attractive conditions in Spain ensure competitive and predictable prices for the purchasers of green electricity and at the same time are making a significant contribution to improving climate conditions.”
Recently Amazon announced three new renewable energy deals totalling 329MW, including the 149MW offtake from the Encavis plant in Spain. Two solar plants in the US, are supplying the remaining 180MW.
The three solar deals will help Amazon reach clean power targets of 80% by 2024 and 100% supply by 2040.
