Enel as started operations at its 220MW Magdalena 2 photovoltaic plant in Mexico.
Magdalena 2, the first clean energy project in Tlaxcala, is the first solar farm in the country to sell its entire electricity output, around 640 gigawatt hours a year, to private offtakers on the country’s wholesale electricity market.
The PV plant is located in the municipalities of Tlaxco and Hueyotlipan.
The construction works have required an investment of around $165m.
The plant’s inauguration ceremony was attended by the governor of Tlaxcala, Marco Antonio Mena Rodriguez, the Italian ambassador in Mexico, Luigi de Chiara, and Paolo Romanacci, Enel Green Power’s Mexico head.
Enel Green Power chief executive Antonio Cammisecra said: “Magdalena 2 supplies emission-free energy to the state of Tlaxcala and to companies that are looking for more sustainable energy options, underscoring our dedication to renewable energy and decarbonisation in line with our global commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The plant is Enel’s first large-scale solar farm to use be comprised entirely of bifacial panels.
With the completion of Magdalena 2, Enel, in Mexico, has exceeded 2300MW of managed capacity, of which 977MW comes from wind power, 1308MW from solar and 53MW from hydro.
At the same time, the company is completing 593MW of wind projects, including Amistad 2 and 3, each around 100MW, and Amistad 4, which is around 149MW, all located in the state of Coahuila, as well of the 244MW Dolores plant, located in the state of Nuevo Leon.
