German companies EP New Energies (EPNE) and LEAG are developing a 300MW solar farm in Germany.
Spremberg City Council has approved the Huhnerwasser and Wolkenberg project to be built on 350 hectares of land at site of the Welzow-Sud opencast mine on the road link between Spremberg and Papproth.
LEAG chief executive Thorsten Kramer said he is delighted that the first hurdle for the project has been cleared with the decision of the Spremberg city councillors.
He said: “Thanks to the good preparation of our project developer together with the LEAG departments, we can take another step in expanding our green electricity portfolio.
“We want to completely replace LEAG’s current 7GW of conventional power generation capacity with renewable power generation capacity and even expand the scope of services.
“Our current project pipeline, which we have developed in cooperation with EPNE, already includes projects with a volume of 2GW, which are already in the planning stage and some are in the approval process.”
EPNE managing director Dominique Guillou said: “We are also working closely with the municipality on the Huhnerwasser und Wolkenberg PV park and are implementing the unique concept of the green solar park.
“In this way, we promote ecological diversity and adapt the system to the landscape with landscape architectural measures.
“Together with the up to 300MWp strong PV park, we already have well over 1GW of wind and PV projects in ongoing approval and construction management processes for our cooperation partner LEAG alone.
“These projects form the basis for the transformation of the Lusatian opencast mines into CO2-neutral energy and economic regions.”
