An affiliate of NextEra Energy Resources has brought online a 100MW solar plus 30MW of storage project at Tucson International Airport in the US state of Arizona.
The Wilmot Energy Center project covers 457 hectares and will supply electricity to Tucson Electric Power under a long-term agreement.
The batteries will be charged by 314,000 solar panels that track the movement of the sun for increased production.
The project will charge the battery in the morning and early afternoon when solar resources are most productive, then deliver stored energy during peak usage periods.
Wilmot Energy Center will produce enough energy over the course of a year to serve the annual electricity needs of about 26,000 homes.
Tucson Electric Power president and chief executive Susan Gray said: “Storage makes solar power even more valuable by helping us provide clean, renewable energy when customers need it most.”
