RWE has secured three new advanced Agri-PV projects in Italy’s latest Resilience and Recovery Plan auction, according to the company.
The developer said Acquafredda 2 at 11.7MWac in Campania, Enna Piscopo at 9.5MWac in Sicily and Cave at 9MWac in Calabria will feature around 47,000 solar modules.
RWE added that construction is due to begin within the next weeks and that commissioning is scheduled for 2026.
The company said the schemes will use elevated mounting structures, including two high tracker systems with a movable axis and one high fixed-tilt design.
RWE said sheep grazing or crop harvesting will take place beneath panels to create a fully integrated agrivoltaic-pastoral system.
The developer added that the structures can protect agricultural areas from hail, frost, drought and heavy rain.
RWE said it will monitor meteorological conditions, agricultural yields and the performance of all three systems.
Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: “This is great timing.”
She said: “Shortly before the completion of our two Agri-PV projects from last year’s auction, we now have the green light to start construction on three more projects using this innovative technology.”
She added: “Italy is taking the lead in Agri-PV because land is a scarce resource that must be used responsibly and efficiently.”
She said: “We look forward to continuing to support Italy’s energy targets.”
RWE said it operates 17 onshore wind farms in Italy with 598MW of installed capacity.
The company added that its first commercial-scale Agri-PV plants Morcone at 9.8MWac and Acquafredda at 9.3MWac are located in Campania.
RWE is also constructing the 47MW Serra Palino wind farm in Apulia and the 45MW Venusia wind farm in Basilicata, the company said.
