RWE has commissioned one of its largest onshore wind farms in Italy, bringing the 53MW Mondonuovo project into operation in the province of Brindisi.
The wind farm, located in the municipality of Mesagne in Apulia, features nine turbines of 5.9MW each.
According to RWE, Mondonuovo will generate enough green electricity to meet the needs of about 55,000 Italian households.
Construction of the project began one year ago and involved 150 professionals from both RWE and external partner companies.
Paolo Raia, country chair at RWE Renewables Italia, said: “The commissioning of the Mondonuovo Wind Farm represents an important milestone in our journey to support Italy in building a sustainable, stable and cost-efficient energy system.
“A big thank you to the RWE team, the local community and all the companies and partners involved. Now our fleet in Italy can provide green energy to more than 500,000 households.
“Looking to the future, the next wind and photovoltaic projects in our country are already ready to start.”
RWE currently operates 17 onshore wind farms and one photovoltaic plant in Italy, with a total installed capacity of 589MW.
The company is also building its first commercial-scale Agri-PV plants worldwide at Morcone (9.8MWac) and Acquafredda (9.3MWac) in Campania.
In March, RWE secured awards for two new Italian wind projects in the FER1 auction.
The 45MW Venusia wind farm in Potenza and the 48MW Serra Palino wind farm in Foggia are both scheduled to begin construction shortly.
