More than 20GW of new utility-scale solar was added around the world in the first half of 2017, bringing the cumulative total close to 120GW, according to Wiki-Solar.
China accounted for 9GW, India 5GW and the US 2.5GW of the new capacity.
Wiki-Solar said South America overtook Europe in terms of new capacity, particularly in Brazil and Chile.
In Europe, there was modest growth in Germany and France, but growth in new capacity in the UK declined following “disintegrating support”.
Wiki-Solar’s Philip Wolfe said: “Assuming installation volumes increase in the second half, as they normally do. I would expect us to get close to a cumulative total of 150G by year-end.”
