Global utility-scale solar capacity grew rapidly in the first six months of the year to reach 75GW and could hit the 100GW mark by year end, according to Wiki-Solar.
New installations in Asia, especially China and India, were the driving force behind the increase in global capacity, which jumped by a quarter from around 60GW at the end of December.
Capacity growth in Europe slowed as the UK appeared to prioritize nuclear power developments over renewables, said Wiki-Solar.
“It might look like a tall order to add a further 25GW to reach 100GW by year-end”, Wiki-Solar’s Philip Wolfe said. “But I think we still have a fighting chance.”
Wolfe noted that its initial figures are often understated because not all sources have finished publishing data and projects are typically completed in the second half of the year as developers strive to meet year-end development targets.
