Bord na Mona head of renewables John Reilly has said rising dispatch down levels on the Irish grid are undermining the business case for building some new onshore wind projects.
Speaking to The reNEWS Podcast, Reilly, who leads the semi-state’s green energy unit, said some operational sites are facing constraints and curtailments of around 30%.
Reilly was speaking after the decommissioning of the developer’s 6.5MW Bellacorick project in County Mayo, the country’s first commercial-scale onshore wind farm.
He told reNEWS Editor Stephen Dunne about that operation, how it will clear the way to deliver the 100MW Oweninny 3 scheme on the plot and how the life of the latter project mirrors wider planning and grid challenges in Ireland.
He also outlines some changes system operators could consider to inject fresh confidence into business cases and shares his optimism that the Irish government is grappling with how to deliver large-scale infrastructure.
