Construction has begun on SSEN Transmission’s Spittal to Peterhead subsea cable linking Caithness and Aberdeenshire.
SSEN Transmission said the 2GW high voltage direct current link will provide a route for electricity from renewable generation to consumers and support UK energy security.
The company added that local contractors Nicol of Skene and John Gunn and Sons are delivering onshore works at Rattray Head and Sinclair’s Bay.
Works at Rattray Head include horizontal directional drilling, duct installation and construction of the main works compound.
In Caithness, early enabling works and initial construction activities are underway, including access roads and drilling, with the main compound due to become operational in the coming weeks.
“We’re making strong progress across the Spittal to Peterhead Link, reflecting the strong collaborative approach between SSEN Transmission, principal contractor NKT, and our delivery partners Nicol of Skene and John Gunn and Sons,” said Niall MacLeod, project director for the Spittal to Peterhead project.
“Close working relationships across the project team are supporting safe, high-quality construction activity on the ground and helping to lay strong foundations for the next phase of the project.”
