TechWorks Marine has begun a year-long metocean survey in Maritime Area A – Tonn Nua on Ireland’s south coast to support EirGrid’s Powering Up Offshore South Coast project.
The Dun Laoghaire-based firm was commissioned by Fugro, EirGrid’s appointed marine survey supplier, to collect baseline oceanographic and environmental data for offshore substations and grid connections.
The initiative is targeting the connection of 900MW of offshore wind capacity to Ireland’s power system to help deliver national goals for 80% renewable electricity and at least 5GW of offshore wind.
The Tonn Nua site is designated for planned offshore wind under the South Coast DMAP and identified as critical to advancing Ireland’s climate and energy security ambitions.
TechWorks Marine said it brings more than 20 years of metocean expertise to the campaign.
“We are delighted to support EirGrid and Fugro on this landmark project for Ireland’s energy transition,” said TechWorks Marine chief executive Charlotte O’Kelly.
“Our team is committed to delivering world-class oceanographic data that underpins a resilient, sustainable renewable energy system on the south coast,” she said.
EirGrid chief transformation, technology and offshore officer Liam Ryan said: “These surveys would not be possible without a huge amount of coordination and strategic planning of staff across EirGrid, our strategic partners, fishing communities and local landowners.”
“The data being gathered from this research is essential in shaping plans for the installation of this transmission infrastructure for offshore wind and creating a cleaner energy future for Ireland,” Ryan said.
