Taihan has broken ground on a new Submarine Cable Plant in the Godae District in Dangjin, South Korea.
The plant will manufacture 640kV-class HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) and 400kV-class HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) submarine cables, and aims to begin operations by 2027.
Taihan said it envisions the facility as the starting point of Korea’s west coast “Energy Highway” and as a strategic hub in the global submarine cable market.
Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Jung-kwan Kim said in a message delivered to a launch event: “This is a meaningful moment as Taihan, Korea’s first cable manufacturer, secures advanced production capabilities in submarine HVDC cables.
“The groundbreaking of Submarine Plant 2 will make an active contribution to realizing the government’s national agenda of building an ‘Energy Highway.'”
The new facility will be built on a 215 thousand square metre site adjacent to Taihan’s existing cable facility, and will include a 180-meter-tall Vertical Continuous Vulcanization system.
The facility will enable five times the production capacity of Taihan’s existing cable plant.
Taihan Vice Chairman Jong-min Song said: “Offshore wind power and HVDC submarine cables are strategic industries directly linked to national industrial competitiveness and energy security.
“Through Submarine Plant 2, we will contribute to building the nation’s energy infrastructure, advancing the renewable energy industry, and establishing a foundation to lead the global market.”
