Low Carbon energises Finnish project

Low Carbon has announced its Mörknässkogen onshore wind project (pictured) in Finland has entered commercial operation.  

With a capacity of 30MW generated from five Nordex turbines, Mörknässkogen is Low Carbon’s first wind project to come online in Finland, part of the company’s goal to deploy renewable energy infrastructure at scale.

Natural Power acted as owner’s engineer.

Located on the west coast of Finland near the city of Vaasa, the site forms part of Low Carbon’s Finnish pipeline of more than 120MW of onshore wind.

This benefits from the region’s abundant wind resource and resultant attractive levelised cost of energy, according to the developer.

The power generated from Mörknässkogen will be sold via a 10-year virtual PPA to hygiene firm Ecolab.

Through the agreement, Ecolab will have sourced enough clean electricity to cover 100% of its European operations, said Low Carbon.

Founder and chief executive of Low Carbon Roy Bedlow said: “Mörknässkogen is our first Finnish wind project to enter operations and is a major milestone for Low Carbon as we look to increase the amount of renewable energy capacity globally.

“The 10-year PPA with our partners Ecolab underlines our shared vision for a world powered by renewables and provides long-term investment certainty for the project.”
