Finnish state-owned company Metsahallitus is to launch a wind measurement campaign in Maalahti, Finland, for the up to 1300MW Korsnas offshore wind farm.
The planned two-year campaign, which was reported in the subscriber-only newsletter reNEWS on 21 October, will involve the erection of a met mast to study wind conditions in Bergo.
Both a crane and a helicopter will be needed to install the mast, which will reach up to a height of around 170 metres, Metsahallitus said.
The purpose of the measurements is to study wind conditions in the area, including the average wind speed, turbulence and variation in wind speeds at different heights.
The wind conditions will be measured as close as possible to the planned hub height of the wind turbines.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the area has favourable wind conditions, the company said.
In addition to the several wind measurement sensors installed on the mast, the wind is also measured with a Sodar unit, which measures sound waves as they travel through the air.
The measurements will also be complemented with lidar.
