RWE Supply & Trading has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with Deutsche Bahn to supply electricity from the 288MW Amrumbank West offshore wind farm off Helgoland.
The PPA will run from 2024 to 2039.
The delivery volume to Deutsche Bahn comprises about a quarter of the annual generation capacity of the offshore wind farm, or 18 turbines, around 260 megawatt-hours.
Amrumbank West is located about 30km off the coast of Helgoland and has a total of 80 wind turbines and has been in operation since 2015.
RWE Supply & Trading managing director Andree Stracke said: “We are already supplying Deutsche Bahn with CO2-free electricity.
“With this further contract, we are helping our long-standing partner to achieve its ambitious climate protection goals.
“We are increasingly supplying and structuring green electricity for our industrial customers in Europe.”
Deutsche Bahn is already the largest green electricity user in Germany.
By 2038, 100% of all electricity powered by the railways will come from renewable sources, from the 61% level today.
Since 2014, RWE hydropower plants have been supplying around 880MWh of green electricity to the railways every year.
In 2019, RWE signed another supply contract with Deutsche Bahn for electricity from its North Sea East offshore wind farm, also near Helgoland.
