Japanese energy company Jera has set a net zero carbon emissions goal and published a roadmap on how it aims to achieve the target in Japan.
Jera said it will reach the goal through a combination of renewable energy, particularly offshore wind, and zero CO2 emission thermal power generation.
The company will also establish roadmaps outlining optimal solutions for each country and region it is active, following the roadmap for Japan.
Jera said that since the energy situation is different for each country and region – such as the presence of regional transmission lines or pipelines and the types of renewable energy that could be adopted – it will work with stakeholders on a country and regional basis to establish roadmaps.
The main pillars of the Japan roadmap are the shutdown of all inefficient coal power plants – supercritical or less – by 2030, and a gradual increase in the ratio of mixed combustion of fossil fuels, ammonia, and hydrogen at thermal power plants.
It will also look to promote the development of renewables, in particular offshore wind.
Going forward, it will gradually develop, the roadmap in greater detail based on relevant conditions such as government policies.
It also aims to reduce the carbon intensity of thermal power plants by 20% by 2030 in Japan.
