The French government has launched a public consultation on plans for a 1GW offshore wind farm off the coast of Normandy.
The period of public debate will run from 15 November until 15 May 2020.
Minister of the Ecological and Solidary Transition Elizabeth Borne said: “The development of renewable energy, especially at sea, is a major component of the diversification of our electricity mix.
To lead this transition, identifying the areas of future offshore wind projects in a concerted way, well in advance of project implementation, is crucial.”
The Multiannual Energy Program (EPP) sets out France’s energy priorities for the next 10 years. The EPP is locating the next French offshore wind farm off the coast of Normandy, which could also be followed by other projects in the same area, according to the government.
Recent regulatory changes have enabled public consultation before a developer is chosen to develop the 1GW project.
The consultation will guide the specific location, or zone, of the park and where it connects to the onshore grid.
It will also address zones for future projects and their connection.
The proposed 1GW wind farm will potentially comprise around 80 12MW wind turbines.
