Siemens Gamesa has secured a conditional order for the supply of turbines to Macquarie and Swancor Renewables’ 376MW Formosa 2 offshore wind farm off Taiwan.
The German-Spanish manufacturer will delivery 47 8.0-167 machines for the project, which will enter construction in 2020.
A 20-year full-service agreement is included in the deal to include the provision of spare parts and tools.
A firm order is subject to a final investment decision by the project partners.
Formosa 2 is located close to the Formosa 1 phase 2, which is currently under construction.
Siemens Gamesa 6MW hardware will feature at the project when it comes online later this year.
“We are delighted to continue our close collaboration with Swancor and Macquarie in Taiwan, which started on Formosa 1, Taiwan’s very first offshore wind power project,” said Niels Steenberg, executive general manager of Siemens Gamesa offshore for Asia-Pacific.
“Siemens Gamesa is committed to the success of those early developments, which will lay the foundations for a prosperous and sustainable offshore wind industry in the market.”
The project partners have meanwhile selected Jan De Nul as engineering, procurement, construction and installation contractor for the foundations and offshore cabling.
Fortune Electric is on a similar turnkey deal for onshore electrical works.
“As well as signing contracts with major suppliers Formosa 2 has signed over 60 contracts with local partners by now, including environmental monitoring, onshore power systems, warehousing and transportation,” said Swancor chairman Robert Tsai.
“The Formosa 2 development team will continue to facilitate industrial localization and deliver work on time,” he added.
Macquarie project director Kimberly Cram said: “Today we are delighted to announce that we have signed our Formosa 2 construction contracts with experienced delivery partners, integrating best practices worldwide with local experiences.”
Jan De Nul said construction is planned to start in 2020 and the wind farm is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2021.
Jan De Nul offshore renewables manager Peter De Pooter said: “Being awarded the Formosa 2 EPCI contract is a very important next step for Jan De Nul Group in the growing Taiwanese offshore wind market.
“This new contract underlines our commitment to Taiwan and more generally to the Asian region in OWF and marine construction projects.
“This award not only builds on the recent project success and experience at the Formosa 1 and Changhua projects, but also on our local presence since many years.
“We very much look forward to delivering our work on Formosa 2, and to helping grow the local capability and skills in offshore wind and the development of a local Taiwanese supply chain.”
Formosa 2 will be one of the first projects completely built out of the Taiwanese government’s zonal development program. This initiative was launched to promote a 5.5GW offshore wind build-out by 2025.
