UK solar contractor BSR Group will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for a 33MW solar and storage plant in Australia’s Northern Territory.
Construction will start on the Katherine solar-storage facility from March 2019.
The hybrid plant is expected to come online from the fourth quarter of this year and BSR will also service and maintain it.
The company has opened a local office in Sydney, Australia, to support its work in the country.
The Katherine project was being developed by a joint venture between renewables player Epuron UK clean energy developer Island Green Power, before being acquired by Italian energy company Eni.
A 6MW battery energy storage system was added during project design to provide stability to the Northern Territory’s 200MW grid.
The battery will smooth fluctuations in the Katherine solar farm’s generation and provide frequency control services.
Smoothing and output forecasting will also be done via the installation of cloud coverage predicting technology.
BSR Group managing director Graham Harding said: “2019 is forecast to become the first year that global solar installations top 100GW and we are excited to contribute to this impressive milestone with our first project in Australia.”
The company has built 550MW of solar and energy storage projects in the UK, including the UK’s four largest solar parks and one of the largest batteries.
