World Marine Offshore crew transfer vessel World Bora had to be tugged back to the port of Sassnitz yesterday following an onboard fire while on duty at Iberdrola’s 350MW Wikinger wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.
The trimaran was some 20km north-west of Sassnitz when the four crew noticed smoke in the engine room and made a distress call at about 11am local time.
Offshore supply vessel Sartor approached the damaged CTV and launched two life boats that remained on standby until Sassnitz-based firefighters arrived on Germany’s maritime search and rescue association DGzRS vessel Bremen (pictured).
The crew managed to bring the fire under control by closing the engine room and flooding it with carbon dioxide before firefighters reached the World Bora. Temperatures of up to 300°C were recorded.
The four crew remained on board, while World Marine Offshore vessel World Golf vessel tugged the CTV back to Sassnitz. DGzRS accompanied the vessels on the journey back to port.
Wikinger consists of 70 Adwen 5MW turbines and has been operational since 2017.
