Renewables will grow to 26% of South Africa’s energy mix by 2030, including almost 11.5GW of onshore wind, under new plans.
The Integrated Resource Plan, published by the Department of Energy, maps a scenario for 8GW of solar PV and 600MW of CSP in addition to the wind goal.
This will require additional capacity of 5.6GW of PV and 8.1GW of wind, which will be the largest of any new generation added in the coming years.
K2 Management country director Hebren James said the plans “recognised” the global energy transition and “mass movement towards clean, affordable and efficient energy”.
“Renewables are playing a vital role in helping countries meet maturing energy needs. It is imperative for South Africa to continue to leverage the immense resources available in the country and ensure renewables plays a key role in the country’s energy mix, as it makes good business sense.”
The public has 60 days to comment on the IRP.
