A joint venture between Royal Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord has signed a contract with the Port of Rotterdam Authority to build the first phase of the Maasvlakte 2 centre, which will service offshore industries including renewables.
The Projectorganisatie Uitbreiding Maasvlakte JV will start work on 1 August on the 70-hectare site.
About 7 million square metres of sand will be extracted offshore and from port basins in order to realise the project, the port said.
Construction of the quay walls is expected to start in mid-2018, with the offshore centre scheduled for completion within two years.
“The establishment of Europe’s first offshore centre is in line with the Port Authority’s policy to further develop Rotterdam’s already highly developed cluster of companies active in the offshore and maritime sectors,” the port said.
