Finnish technology group Wartsila is to provide switch and distribution boards for an offshore reactive compensation station that will installed at Dong Energy’s 1.2GW Hornsea 1 wind farm off the UK east coast.
The contract is with Babcock International Group for what will be the world’s first offshore reactive compensation station.
The station will enable the high voltage AC system to work with cable lengths longer than those previously used on offshore wind farms, and will be located between the project site 120km from the coast and the shore.
Hornsea 1 is expected to be operational in 2020.
Babcock Rosyth site managing director Ian Donnelly said: “Babcock is delighted to be working with Wartsila on this project.
“It is an important member of our supply chain, and its switchboards and distribution boards will play an important role in the successful delivery of the world’s first offshore reactive compensation station being built at Babcock Rosyth for the wind farm.”
