Germany’s offshore wind farms exported a total of 12.09 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity to the country in 2016, according to the two grid operators TenneT and 50Hertz.
In the German North Sea, wind farms exported 10.83TWh of electricity in 2016, a 47% increase on the 7.35TWh exported in 2015, said TenneT.
An additional 1.26TWh was exported from wind farms in the German part of the Baltic Sea, where grid connections are operated by 50Hertz.
Nine grid hubs were installed in the North Sea by the end of the year, with an additional cumulative grid capacity of 5221MW.
“We already accomplished more than 80% of the German government’s 6500MW offshore wind goal for 2020,” said TenneT executive Lex Hartman.
Onshore and offshore wind turbines in Germany produced some 78.16TWh in 2016. The North Sea offshore share increased to 13.9% from 9.6% in 2015, TenneT said.
