Brazil’s installed wind capacity has reached 10GW and will surpass 18GW by the end of the decade, according to the Associacao Brasileira do Energia Eolica (ABEEolica).
The milestone was reached this month after French developer Voltalia connected its 24MW Vila Para II wind farm, the lobby group said.
About 60 billion Brazilian real has been invested so far in the technology, which now represents 7% of the country’s power capacity, it added.
Brazil operates 400 wind farms with a total of 5251 turbines.
“Considering that we already have contracts signed, we will reach 2020 with more than 18GW and we have the potential to grow much more,” ABEEolica president Elbia Gannoum said.
